The Brass
our credo · an unholding company of impossible things
You should not have to become an expert in the systems wrapped around your own life. You did anyway.
Somebody built it that way. It can be built a better way.
The person subject to it can do four things.
Every system you deal with fails at least one. Almost none of them let you leave.
Warhol had a factory where nobody punched a clock and anybody could walk in. The Unicorn Factory is an unholding company forged in that same fire, and the three companies it doesn’t hold carry the same five lines, stamped in brass.
- 1
The burden goes on the system, not on you.If a thing built to serve you is hard to use, the thing is wrong.
- 2
The tool makes you more able to act on your own.Nothing here is built to make you need it.
- 3
Trust comes from evidence.Every claim shows its source. When we don't know, we say so.
- 4
We design from the person the system fails worst. What fixes it for them fixes it for everyone.
- 5
The machine works for you. It does not decide for you.The hand on the lever stays yours.
Work, the kind you do for money, is on its way out. That leaves one question, and it isn't about the technology.
Who does the machine answer to?
That decision is being made now, in the design of ordinary tools, by whoever shows up to make it.
Three companies carry this brass.
